There is something different about living on an island rather than the mainland. My wife and I moved to Key West in 1999 and find it remarkable that we still feel the difference. And Key West is no average island. Only one mile wide and four miles long it is the last Key in the island chain known as the Florida Keys that separate the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico. U.S. Highway 1 ends and begins in Key West and there are 120 miles and 42 bridges between it and Florida City on the mainland. Since it was first settled in the early 1800’s, this remoteness and tropical climate has promoted a care-free, end of the road culture and lifestyle. This ‘Last Resort’ attitude is further enhanced by the fact that the island is also the Southernmost Point of the continental United States.
