Key West has the only deep water channel and harbor in the Florida Keys and therefore becomes a destination for all types of ocean going vessels making the trip around Florida. The variety of water craft seen on a daily basis ranges from cruise ships, military ships and cutters, private yachts to paddle boards.
On a windy, sunny Saturday in May 2010 the annual Paddle Around the Island race was held with a variety of modes of water transportation entries. Although Key West is a small island it is still a 12 mile trip by water from the start to the finish and a real test of endurance.
