Backroads to Old Florida

To find the true ‘Old Florida’ and the history of what made the state what it is today, one must get off of the Interstate, out of the city and head down the two-lane blacktop to seek out the state’s disappearing history. You will be surprised at the sometimes quirky, weird, and wonderful Florida that is still there for you to discover. We have been wandering the state for several years seeking out these historic gems; and we have years of exploring still to do.

  • Robert is Here

    Robert is Here

After leaving the Turnpike in Florida City you must head west on State Hwy 9336 until you reach the corner at SW 192nd Ave. You have then reached the Robert Is Here Fruit Stand. It is an institution to all that pass thru the area. It started over fifty years ago when Robert Moehling was a young boy and wanted to make some money by selling fresh fruit. On this empty corner of the highway his dad put up a sign to draw attention to his son by simply saying “Robert is here”. And that is how it started and he now includes his son in the business.

    Anna Maria City Jail

Turn west off of I-75 onto State Hwy 64 thru Bradenton and across Anna Maria Sound you will reach Anna Maria Island, turn right onto State Hwy 789 to downtown Anna Maria. I know, it’s a lot of Anna Maria’s. It’s a very small friendly town but one thing you didn’t want to do in years past was to be locked-up.

  • Jungle Trail

    Jungle Trail

The State Hwy A1A hugs the entire east coast of Florida and in Vero Beach the road is on the barrier island. The unpaved Jungle Trail was built through the natural hammock habitat in the 1920’s prior to A1A’s completion so that citrus growers could haul their produce to the boat docks to transport to the mainland. Today there is nearly 8 miles of the road remaining that is still used by cars; but is mostly used by cyclist, walkers and joggers.

Although it is widely known for its large collection of waterlilies located within its Old Florida Coastal habitat, you can’t beat the sight of a large tree stump for an Old Florida attraction!
